Position/Title: Design Development Manager

Reports to: Program Director

  1. Function
    The Design Development Manager is responsible for the development of all product and device platforms at MAP. The Design Development Manager works in collaboration with internal and external design, development, and manufacturing resources, as well as the internal MAP scientists, QA group, and program/project management functions, to define and design these platforms.
  2. Specific Responsibilities and Activities
    1. Develops product design concepts and prototypes
    2. Works with the MAP technical community, patients, and clinicians to convert concept devices or prototypes into functional components
    3. Executes product, subassembly, and component design evaluations from concept through engineering and Design Verification stages for commercial products, clinical product programs, venture feasibility evaluations, demonstration purposes, with supporting documentation packages
    4. Performs product and device troubleshooting for diagnosing root causes for component or system failures, and tracks failure modes
    5. Directs Product Quality, Design for Manufacturability, and Failure Modes and Effects Analyses in evolving devices through final validated release forms
    6. Develops product procurement, release testing, and inspection specifications
    7. Generates engineering change orders, project plans and budgets with input from management
    8. Plans and manages development projects and external vendors effectively and efficiently to time and budgetary milestones
    9. Manages internal MAP CAD database and engineering change control system
    10. Serves as primary MAP project interface and coordinates projects with development engineering, design and manufacturing firms and other appropriate suppliers and contractors
    11. Performs other activities as defined by management and project team requirements
  3. Requirements
    1. Education
      • A minimum of a Bachelor's degree or equivalent. RN with evidence of further study considered. Major course of study in Science or Health-related preferred. Advanced degree preferred.
    2. Training and Experience
      • 7+ years direct experience in medical device product development and engineering management
      • Capable of managing a team in the design, creation, development, and procurement of working models, prototypes, and plastic components
      • Experienced using CAD-based platforms (ProE and SolidWorks experience preferred)
      • Possesses both strong electromechanical skills with understanding of automation, robotics, actuators, sensors and fluid mechanics and effective team management skills
    3. Other
      • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills with the ability to work in a global development and manufacturing environment
      • Demonstrated ability to multitask in high pressure, changing conditions
      • Willing to travel locally, nationally, and internationally up to 25% of time to vendors and contractors
      • Must comply with MAP Pharmaceuticals, Inc. safety and corporate policies
