Position/Title: Early Stage Medical Device Design Engineer
Reports to: Product Development Manager
- Function
The Aerosol Design Engineer is responsible for creating new and innovative aerosol technologies and device concepts across all platforms at MAP. The Aerosol Design Engineer works in collaboration with the internal MAP engineers, scientists, and program/project management functions as well as appropriate external design and vendors to take concepts from first inception and facilitate their development into commercial articles and processes. - Specific Responsibilities and Activities
- Designs and develops new aerosolization technologies and device design concepts for dry powders, propellant driven systems and liquids, generating new IP in these areas. Strong analytical and creative skills are needed to brainstorm and develop concepts/visualizations. Develops product design concepts and creates prototypes in collaboration with design and development teams using Finite Element Analysis and other methods.
- Leads the discovery, definition, design, and evaluation of new products. Works internally and with vendors to produce first proof-of-concept articles i.e. test-beds/rigs, non-functional and functional models and prototypes
- Verifies and improves design concepts by (i) modeling aerosol and fluid transport behaviors using techniques including CFD and (ii) functional testing.
- Continually researches innovations in the field and strives to create cutting edge technology beyond the current state of the art.
- Works with the MAP technical community to convert concept devices and prototypes into functional components and platforms. Pays careful attention to materials selection at all stages of the design/development process taking into considerations: safety, adhesion/cohesion, mechanical/chemical durability and compatibility, and manufacturability: small scale through to commercial scale.
- Consults when necessary for design, development and integration for new filling and product packaging concepts into the above new technologies using knowledge of powder and liquid transport properties, generating new IP in these areas.
- Creates, recommends, develops and implements methods for the characterization and evaluation of novel aerosolization and packaging/filling technologies as well as design concepts
- Responsible for conducting concept verification, feasibility studies, and product scale-up evaluations and documenting work in technical reports and Design History File according to Design Control processes
- Performs product, subassembly, and component design evaluation for clinical product programs, venture feasibility evaluations, and demonstration purposes, with supporting documentation
- Performs product and device troubleshooting for diagnosing root causes for component or system failures, tracks failure modes, and authors investigation reports
- Provides inputs to bills of materials, design control engineering change orders, project plans and budgets with input from management.
- Runs brainstorming sessions in MAP community, presents findings from conferences, encourages creative thinking within technical teams.
- Requirements
- Education
- B.S./M.S. degree required, preferably in a scientific or engineering discipline
- Training and Experience
- 4 to 6 years direct experience in medical device design and research in biotech/pharmaceutical arenas
- Proven track record of innovation as evidenced by patents and patent applications, publications and concepts that have been accepted into further development.
- Demonstrated ability to multitask in high pressure, changing conditions
- Other
- Excellent creativity skills, organizational, problem solving, and interpersonal skills, seeking always to drive innovation where possible.
