Position/Title: Senior Aerosol Scientist

- General Summary:
Responsible for creating new and innovative aerosol technologies and device concepts across all platforms of the Company. Responsible for developing mechanistic understanding on different phenomenon observed during aerosol generation and delivery; developing new aerosol characterization methods; improving the existing aerosol characterization methods; and fine tuning the existing aerosol generators to fit different formulations. Works in collaboration with internal engineers, scientists, and program/project management functions as well as appropriate external design and vendors to take concepts from first inception and facilitate their development into commercial articles and processes. - Essential Job Functions:
- Designs and develops new aerosolization technologies and device design concepts for dry powders, propellant driven systems and liquids, generating new IP in these areas.
- Develops product design concepts and creates prototypes in collaboration with design and development teams using Finite Element Analysis and other methods.
- Develops mechanistic understanding on different phenomenon observed during aerosol generation and delivery
- Develops new (more efficient) aerosol characterization methods and continue improving the existing aerosol characterization methods.
- Fine tunes the existing aerosol generators to fit different formulations.
- Supports particle engineering and particle/formulation characterization efforts.
- Performs CFD, thermodynamics and statistical analysis.
- Leads the discovery, definition, design, and evaluation of new products. Works internally and with vendors to produce first proof-of-concept articles i.e. test-beds/rigs, non-functional and functional models and prototypes
- Drives R&D activities forward by improving processes and operations, using creative problem solving to identify areas for improvement and novel research
- Verifies and improves design concepts by (i) modeling aerosol and fluid transport behaviors using techniques including CFD and (ii) functional testing.
- Continually researches innovations in the field and strives to create cutting edge technology beyond the current state of the art.
- Performs product and device troubleshooting for diagnosing root causes for component or system failures, tracks failure modes, and authors investigation reports
- Runs brainstorming sessions, presents findings from conferences, encourages creative thinking within technical teams.
- Supervisory Responsibilities:
- May directly supervise employee(s).
- May provide supervision, training, and technical support to direct reports and other members of the company.
- Eucation/Experience/Skills:
Education
- PhD in Chemical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Physics or other related discipline.
- Typically requires a minimum of six (6) years of related experience and/or combination of experience and education/training
- Direct experience in pharmaceutical/biotech industries.
- Proven knowledge and experience in Computational Fluid Dynamics, aerosol transport and dynamics, gas species transport, thermodynamics, gas and surface chemistry and interphase mass, momentum and energy coupling and statistical analysis.
- Proven knowledge and experience in model and code and/or subroutine development and grid generation and post processing and visualization.
- Proven knowledge and experience working on aerosol science and technology, preferably in pulmonary drug delivery arena.
- Proven track record of innovation as evidenced by patents and patent applications, publications and concepts that have been accepted into further development.
- Performs a variety of complicated tasks with a wide degree of creativity and latitude.
- May lead or supervise the work of others by providing direction to subordinates or teams based on general policies and management guidance.
- Determines methods and procedures on new assignments.
- Has wide-ranging experience in area of specialization.
- Uses professional concepts and company objectives to resolve complex issues in creative and effective ways.
- Has complete understanding and wide application of technical principles, theories, concepts and techniques.
- Has good general knowledge of other related disciplines.
- Applies strong analytical and business communication skills.
